GMG's Friday Find - Don't forget the Forsythia!

This week's Friday Find is on a more personal note. I was reading an article by Kevin Sharkey in Martha Stewart's Living Magazine (March issue) and realized I have exactly what Kevin wants...a long hedge of forsythia...except mine run the perimeter of my backyard and not along the driveway. A slight difference. 

After reading Kevin's story about how to use forsythia in decorating your indoors, I got up, went out back and took in the beauty of my forsythia. I would normally see the yellow flowers and mention it to my husband that they had bloomed but I never really went out back to experienced their beauty. This is definitely their time to shine! And do they shine! With the sun beaming down on them it is almost hard to look directly at them.

I just took these pictures...hopefully you will enjoy the view as much as I do...

Take Your Kids to Work Day at Martha Stewart

This Thursday I'll be taking my daughter, Morgan, to the offices of Martha Stewart Living in NYC for their annual Take Your Kids to Work Day.

Now you're probably wondering how this invite fell in my lap since I don't even work at MSL. Well, I really need to thank my client, Costa Farms. They're providing 60 of their beautiful mini-orchids for the gardening activity that day. Kids will re-pot these mini-orchids (pictured here) and then decorate the container with fun stuff like stickers and paint. Plus, they'll learn all about the history of orchids as well as how to care for them from deputy garden editor, Tony Bielaczyc. While Morgan's there, she'll also get to make homemade granola, create her own How-to book and take a tour of the MSL offices.

We're both so excited to take some time off to spend with the generous folks at Martha Stewart Living and maybe do a little sight-seeing!

Martha Says -Grow Your Own

Are you ready for spring? I know I'm officially counting down the days until March 20th (40 as of today!). To really get myself in the planting mood, I love perusing all the latest special gardening issues that come into the office.

I was so excited when we received Martha Stewart's Special Gardening Issue, especially since Campania's lightweight containers are featured in a small-space gardening article.

The author, Stacey Hirvela, did a great job explaining and showcasing the types of vegetables that are suitable for containers as well as window boxes. Thanks to Stacey, I now have all the know-how to start planning my own container garden!

Monday and Martha Stewart

At the recent Winterthur Delaware Antiques Show, Martha Stewart took a sold out crowd "on a tour" of Skylands, her home on Mount Desert Island in Maine.

Known as her favorite spot, the former house of Edsel and Eleanor Ford features looks out on Seal Harbor and Acadia National Park, where Martha says she loves to hike.

The 35,000 square-foot house was designed in 1925 by New York architect Duncan Candler, who also designed public buildings in Manhattan and several residences for the Rockefellers.

Martha paid homage to Danish landscape architect and city planner Jens Jensen, who adhered to a prairie ideal of open spaces and natural plantings in his free-form design of Skylands. Reflecting pools, moss gardens and a communal circle fires offer guests places to gather and talk.

Martha got a big laugh from the audience when she told the story of purchasing these two glazed terra-cotta sphinxes designed by Emile Muller. They catalog showed the ladies from the shoulders up. Martha said they stayed for years in storage. And finally found a home in Maine.
