2018 Garden Trends to be Unveiled at Cultivate ‘17

Attendees at Cultivate ‘17 will have the first look at Garden Media highly anticipated 2018 Garden Trends Report.
Susan McCoy and Katie Dubow will unveil the seven new trends at AmericanHort’s annual conference July 15 in Columbus, OH.
Cultivate brings together horticulture professionals from across the globe. It’s one of the biggest and best horticulture trade shows, making it the perfect place to reveal our trends.
The report, which will not be available for download until September, takes a deeper look into the role wellness plays in the garden. People are becoming increasingly aware that mental health is just as important as physical health – and it’s affecting the way they garden.
We already know gardening works wonders for our health. Now we’re looking at the ways people are transforming their gardens to further improve their mental and spiritual well-being.
From how plants form their own social networks to people creating indoor breathing rooms, gardening will once again shift to reflect global changes. The report closely examines how these changes affect gardeners.
Garden Media has released its annual trends report every year since 2001. Along with the report, the firm releases a YouTube video series and weekly blogs to keep consumers informed all year long.
Cultivate ‘17 takes place from Saturday, July 15 to Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH.

Missed MANTS? The Best of MANTS 2013 for Garden Industry Leaders

Since MANTS, aka the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show, is one of our favorite trade shows of the year, we wanted to recap the experience and the stars for those of you who couldn't attend.

First of all, MANTS is the place to be in January.  One exhibitor from Oregon said, "if you don't show up at MANTS you might as well not be in business”, another said MANTS is the Big Leagues compared to all other shows around the country!” No wonder it’s nicknamed The Masterpiece of Trade Shows™. We couldn’t agree more!

Lavender Phenomenal

Lavender is one of my personal favorite plants of all time, so I may be a bit biased… But, everyone else loved the Lavender Phenomenal too! This Lavender plant was introduced by our friend Lloyd Traven at Peace Tree Farm and is absolutely amazing. The Lavender Phenomenal  is a survivor; it survives exceptionally well through the winter and can even withstand extreme heat and humidity. This hearty, little plant also is deer proof and attracts butterflies. What more can a gal want?

We’ve been a lover of BrazelBerries for some time, but we will never pass up the opportunity to celebrate the most delicious shrub we know. These beautiful blueberry and raspberry shrubs are thornless dwarf shrubs can fit on your patio or your front lawn. Best of all, you eat them! They produce the most succulent fruits I have ever tasted, and the shrub looks breathtaking in every season.  Get yours from Whiteflower Farm today!

Lavender Veil Butterfly Bush
This flowering shrub is a superstar for many reasons.  It has a low, compact growth habit, grows and abundance of fragrant flowers, is perfect for containers and it is wildlife friendly!  As the name suggests, butterflies and hummingbirds will flock to it.

Our Garden Media team was also buzzing around MANTS with a video camera. Did you see us?  We were interviewing everyone from attendees to exhibitors and asking what they liked best about MANTS.  Why do they come back year after year?  We also highlighted all the best aspects of MANTS and why it’s SO incredibly important to attend industry trade shows. The finishing touches are still being added to the video, but be on the lookout! As soon as the video’s done, we’ll share it here!

Please Allow me to Reintroduce Myself!

I recently wrote an article about image building and rebranding for Green Profit magazine and wanted to share:

"You know what they say about first impressions lasting a lifetime? Baloney! From people to brands and politicians, this country is all about second chances. You just have to know how to reintroduce yourself properly and to the right people.

We decided to re-launch Garden Media Group for a multitude of reasons. One, a new generation entered the fold: me. My mother, Susan McCoy, started her public relations business 25 years ago and last year I came home to roost. She wanted the company to have my stamp on it.

Second, one of our clients, Fall Creek Farm & Nursery, suggested it. When we offered a sneak peek of our new website to Amy Daniel, Fall Creek’s marketing manager, she told us our brand needed a facelift. In a very thoughtful and uplifting manner, she said, “Your brand does not represent the caliber of work you’re producing or the reputation of the firm.”

When I visit IGCs, I notice the trend is not just two, but often three, generations working the family business. Re-branding allows this fresh, young blood a chance to take a new kind of ownership in the company. But people are often afraid of change. Having an outside pair of eyes critique your business, your perceived value in the community and your competition is a worthwhile exercise—just remember to have an open mind.

Perceived value is hugely overlooked in our industry, while companies like Apple take advantage of it with each new product launch. Perceived value is your ability to satisfy customers’ needs and to enhance what they believe your products or plants are worth.

A company “face lift” with a new brand package sends a message that something new, fresh and exciting is going on. It says you are keeping current and care about all your customer touch points. And this, in turn, greatly increases your perceived value—which increases the bottom line.

At Garden Media, one of our specialties is launching new brands, like the new Brazelberries Collection of ornamental berry shrubs. We have learned more than a few tricks over the years and applied them when we re-launched our brand. Here’s what worked for us:

Plan Your Launch Strategy. Our goal was to get noticed by old and new customers and the media. Decide what your goal is, who you want to inform about your new brand and how you want to tell them. Determine how much you want to spend and what your time frame is. Make a detailed list of where your current logo or brand is shown (signage, website, blog, email signatures, letterhead, etc.) and make sure you consider the impact of your new brand and how to make the necessary changes.

Create Branded Kits. We put together branded collateral, including new business cards, signage, note cards, notepads, Post-it notes, pens and thermal mugs all wrapped up in a new Garden Media tote bag. We also had new headshots taken that we branded for our social media accounts.

Host a Launch Event. Throw a big party! We launched our brand at this year’s Garden Writers Association Symposium, but you can do it anytime. Invite the local media. Hand out branded gift bags.

Publicize yourself. Send a press release to local media and pertinent trade publications like Green Profit. Push it out on all of your social media channels. No social channels? A re-branding is a great time to start!

Have it all planned to drop at the same time. Timing is key. Plan, plan, plan.

Launching a new brand can be scary, intimidating and expensive, but the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages when you’re given the chance to re-introduce yourself."
